ABOUT ME

I am an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator in the Instructional Design and Development program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I am currently a Faculty Fellow in Engaged Scholarship (2021-2022).
I hold a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems, with a specialization in usability and human-computer interaction, from Florida State University. I obtained my M.A. in Education, specializing in instructional technology, from Virginia Tech. I also obtained an M.A. in Writing (Technical and Professional) from Portland State University.
In addition to my academic preparation, I have an extensive (20 year) background in technical writing, instructional design, and usability consulting and have worked at Wells Fargo Bank, Intel, IBM, Cisco, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Nike. My practitioner and academic backgrounds help to guide my research agenda and teaching philosophy.
I am also very active in providing service to the instructional design profession. In the past, I served as the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) Design and Development Board Representative for the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT). I also served as a Design and Development (D&D) Division Board Associate for AECT and as a faculty mentor for Designers for Learning. In 2016, I received an AECT Cochran Leadership Intern Award and in 2019, I was selected as an AECT Early Career Symposium mentee.
